The 2016 Grand National Tips

The race that stops the World (You heard me Melbourne- the World!) Broadcast in 140 countries and I’m lucky enough to be attending my second Grand National (not rubbing it in I promise) although I am guilty of watching parts of the race through my fingers I do love absolutely it! Now I always get lots of messages and tweets asking me for Grand National tips and I can honestly say I have NEVER backed the winner of the National in the 9 years I have been betting, nor can you really tip a Grand National winner. Your guess is really as good as mine, honestly!

But that said here are my selections for the day:

A competitive handicap to kick off with and not a race I would be lumping my mortgage on. Squouateur was well backed in the Martin Pipe last month but couldn’t justify the market support finishing 7/24 although it looks like the step up in trip will suit but he’s not for me. I’m siding with Arpege Dalene- I was impressed with his recent second in the Pertemps and I’m hoping first time cheek pieces will also bring improvement.

Win - Arpege Dalene 10/1 TOP PRICE at StanJames.com

E/W - Ubak 20/1 TOP PRICE at StanJames.com

The first of the shortie races! We got Vautour beat yesterday so we’re hoping Yorkhill will follow suit (Obviously we want him to come back safe and sound no matter what) No point in my yabbering on about how good Yorkhill is- unbeaten under rules and don’t think he will get beat. So I am looking for some each way value and I like Flying Angel. Good handicapper and I’m sure he won’t win but I think he could put in a good run.

Win - Yorkhill TOP PRICE 3/10 at StanJames.com

E/W - Flying Angel 12/1 at StanJames.com

Unless you’re having 6k to win 1k let’s forget about the favourite for a minute. The Game Changer is my e/w punt. His hold up tactics will be perfect for this race (I hope) and I think he’ll reverse placings with Fox Norton today. Douvan should win

Win - Douvan 1/6 at StanJames.com

E/W - The Game Changer 25/1 TOP PRICE at StanJames.com

Thistlecrack that is all. Great Festival winner and would like to see him win this (Sorry Stan James racing desk!) Each way needed I do like our Jumps Ambassador Nicky Henderson’s charge Different Gravey but I am giving Price Of Scars the nod. He’s really come on of late and landed a nice Grade 1 at Leopardstown in December, he’ll like the ground too.

Win - Thistlecrack TOP PRICE 2/7 at StanJames.com

E/W - Prince Of Scars 14/1 at StanJames.com

I have to be honest this is not a race I am extremely confident in- so playing small. I am thinking Nina Carberry’s ride Knock House has the better chance out of the Channon duo. Ran well in the Kim Muir and Nina knows the horse. Sorry if I sound uninspired but it’s because I am.

E/W- Knock House 8/1 at StanJames.com

5:15 The Grand National (Remember we are paying FIVE places)

The biggie!! As mentioned before I don’t really think this is a race you can tip but I have backed Holywell my reasons being:

• Well handicapped that’s for sure.

• Needs to prove himself over fences at this trip but has won a Grade One over the Mildmay fences here.

• Finished a very solid second at the Festival and has carried Cheltenham form to Aintree before.

For PR purposes I would like to see Many Clouds win again, I think The Last Samuri will run a good race, reasons here:

• Formally trained by Donald McCain so National would have been the plan for this horse.

• Good run at Newcastle and won well at Kempton.

• Well handicapped after easy win in Grimthorpe.

I also think Saint Are has a good chance reasons here:

• Runner up last year and had completed the race 4/4 times.

• He’s won the Grade One Sefton Novices’ Hurdle here too.

• Gutsy win at Donny last time out and looked very solid.

Win- Holywell 16/1 TOP PRICE at StanJames.com

E/W- The Last Samuri 12/1 TOP PRICE at StanJames.com

The Lucky Last (we hope) Dell Arca is the best backed horse of the day with Stan James 7/1 from 20/1. This handicap hurdle is wide open and I am finding it hard to not pick 4 or 5 of these runners. But gun to my head my win bet would be Thunder Sheik he’s in great form at the moment and is looking to land the hat-trick today. Each way I like Madfuninthewest.

Win- Thunder Sheik 10/1 at StanJames.com

E/W=- Madfuninthewest 14/1 at StanJames.com

Happy punting!
