Newmarket Craven Meeting | Day One Preview

I cannot explain how happy I am to have racing back at Newmarket, not just because it’s on my doorstep but I love the Rowley Mile. I also love this meeting (I don’t win much mind you) but great to watch these maiden races. Not sure how much stamina I will have now its three days but there are some top class horses lining up that I don’t want to miss out on. I had a look at the races and although I will be mostly observing I will have a placepot and a couple of bets.

2.10 Fillies’ Stakes (Class 4)

Hooray for Newmarket’s first maiden of the year. Couple of interesting sorts in this race. I like Swiss Range and she’s fitted with headgear today. She finished a nice second here over 7f on debut and I hope today she can go one better. The lads on the Stan James racing desk tell me there has been some money for My Favourite thing and her yard is definitely in form. Golden Stunner was placed in 3/4 starts last year and experience will matter but she just doesn’t quite do it for me after looking back at her races.

Win- Swiss Range is 7/4 at

 2:45 Conditions Stakes (Class 3)

Vincent’s Forever has an entry for the Derby  and made a winner start at Leciester back in October. Tabarrak holds an entry for the 2000 Guineas and our new Flat Racing Ambassador recently said in his new Stan James blog he really likes this horse. I am siding with Mohab though (only slightly) he has some impressive entries and I think Keven Ryan’s colt could win this.

Win- Mohab is Top Price 6/1 at

3.20 Handicap (class 2)

Even after a quick look at this race I couldn’t look much past Grandad’s World. He won a handicap over this trip at Ponte last year and has Ryan Moore in the saddle. Golden Amber won a similar handicap over C&D last season but only narrowly.

Win- Grandad’s World is Top Price 5/2 at

3.55 Feilden Stakes (Listed)

Golden Horn won this race 12 months ago and went on to win the Derby and Dante. Tathqeef has the same entries and whilst I don’t think he will be as good as Golden Horn (You never know though) he made a good winning debut at Wolves. Hannon said in his blog he thinks this horse is Listed class if not better.

Win- Tathqueef is Top Price 5/2 at

4.30 The Nell Gwyn (Fillies Group 3)

Having this conversation with Giles Bravery earlier we both agreed that Nathra probably wins this. She progressed nicely last year and was beat into second in
Group 1 company (Minding the winner) Coolmore finished 4th that day and finishes second today in my eyes (we can but hope!)

Win- Nathra is 6/4 at

5:05 Maiden Stakes (class 4)

I’m putting up another favourite here I know! I am kinda following the money we have seen on the trading desk today. Fawaareq didn’t quite get there at Leicester but shouldn’t find the stiff finish difficult here. Gosden has a 200,000gns yearling that could also be interesting.

Win- Fawaareq is 5/2 Top Price at
