'The Problem' with the Answers?
A really interesting match-up at Welterweight as the charismatic and enigmatic Broner, takes on the rough and ready Grandados in an intriguing battle of styles and wits. Will former four-division World Champion Adrien 'The Problem' Broner be able to put the issues he faced in 2016 away and return focused against the dangerous and unpredictable Grandados?
It remains to be seen, but the issues he faced when not making the weight last time out (he stopped Londoner Ashley Theophane in the ninth) and should have won the vacant WBA super-lightweight title, but failed to make the weight and has had trouble this time round, with the fight, originally being scheduled at 140lbs being moved ot 147ilbs. He also served a 30-day jail-term for assault, and seemed to fall into a pit of self-loathing towards the end of the year, when many were concerned for his well-being. If his mind is right, then it is easy to see why Broner is the favourite to win, but few things in life are clear-cut, especially boxing and Grandados has the tools and style to make things awkward for Broner.
The two have sparred together quite regularly in the past and, despite our endeavours, we can't find out much about how those sessions went. Footage is seemingly non-existent and both fighters seem reluctant to discuss how the sessions went, which is particulary suprising given Broner's usual loquaciousness.
It's true, Broner does have a crowd-pleasing style, but each time he's faced a strong, aggressive brawler, who gets busy and likes the action, he's lost. Remember the bouts against Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter, who took the fight to Broner, took him out of his comfort zone? Yep, he lost, and lost convincingly. There's a lot of hype about The Problem, and on song he does remind you of a young Mayweather, but there are definite chinks in his armour and it will be interesting to see how he fares against the taller man.
Adrian Granados, on the other hand, seems to have come up the hard way. Not much hype and promotion behind him, but the four defeats on his record should not be read into too deeply. He lost on a split decision in his first, two extremely controversial decisions and pushed the talented Frankie Gomez all the way before losing on yet another controversial majority decision. Indeed, since fighting Amir Imam in Novemember 2015 and battering him into submission in the eighth, he hasn't found anyone else to fight him!
So, how do we see this one going then? We've been impressed by the new humble Broner, who remains a potent package if his mind is right. It should be remembered that Grandalos, however, has actually fought at this weight more often. You'd pick Broner on skills, but that doesn't necessarily make him a better fighter. Grandalos will come out and look to put the favourite under pressure early on and, at 3/1 he's just too big to ignore.*
Grandalos with the win, then, possibly by stoppage in the middle/late rounds.
