Wembley. Home of heroes where legends are born! London will host Chris Eubank Jr as he takes on the experienced Arthur Abraham in the first defence of his IBO super-middleweight title.
Join us then, as we go ringside and our man weighs up both fighters and suggests a shot that might just put Stan on the canvas in his preview, below:
Eubank Jr v Abaham | Saturday 15th July | SS1, from 9pm
'King Arthur' to be dethroned?
Chris Eubank. Fight fans the world over remember the name as the British boxer who captivated our attention when facing the best in the world aross three weight divisions twenty years ago. His style made him an akward customer, both in and out of the ring. Fast forward twenty years and we have Chris Eubank Jr, a similarly polarising individual for whom the nickname, 'marmite' - you either love him or hate him - might be applied.
However, comparisons with his father should stop there. Eubank Jr is his own man and has learned the hard way what it takes to succeed in the square circle, having lost a hard fight to current WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders. Since then, he has won his last six fights, including the win over Renold Quinlan in February. The hard-hitting Londoner scored KOs in 19 of is 24 victories, but faces a wiley, experienced campaigner in Abraham and could well face going the distance in his first defence of his IBO Super-Middleweight title defence.
Abraham, who was born in Armenia but now fights under the German flag, is looking to refocus a career many are fearing is coming to an end. Hugely sucessful at middleweight, the then IBF champ moved up to super-middleweight, where his power hasn't had quite the same effect. He can bomb, make no mistake about that and the three-time, two-weight world champion (he was WBO super-middleweight champ between 2012-16) has the nous and ringcraft to make things difficult for Eubank. His chin and heart can not be questioned (only one of his 5 defeats through 13 years as a pro has come by knockout and he has won 8 of his last 10 fights by decision, which proves that he still has stamina in those legs. Make no mistake, however, King Arthur is by far the best opponant Eubank has faced and he'll hunt Eubank with ternacity and ferocity, movng forward and swinging haymakers... should one connect...
Not only will the winner be crowned champ, he will also going on to face Avni Yildirim in the autumn in the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) as third seed. With the memory of Chris Eubank senior's epic batles against Benn, Watson, and Collins as fresh and vivid now as they were brutal and exciting twenty years ago, perhaps junior is on the path to creating his own legacy... only time will tell!
Eubank has the advantage of age, height and reach. He has fast hand speed and six knockouts in a row show he has power in abundance and he looks hungry. Abraham has the experience to make things akward for Junior, and the older man is a dangerous opponant, for sure, but we can see the younger man learning on the job before winning by a late KO or TKO. Eubank to win in rounds 9-12: 12/1
“I know I am up against the toughest opponent of my career but I can’t wait to get going. I respect him. I know what he has done in the past and I know how solid he is. But I’m something very special and I will show everyone that I’m the best super middleweight in the world." Chrs Eubank.
