FA Cup | Four Potential Cupsets This Weekend

Social Sharing:

The FA Cup makes a welcome return to our screens this weekend! It's last 16 time, and, with every round of FA Cup clashes, a bit of magic is sprinkled at one or two places and an upset does happen! There've been plenty of high profile cases in previous years and already this season there have been a few which have raised eyebrows, too. In fact, one of those serial cupsetters preview in this blog, as we take a look at a quartet of ties which may go the way you don't expect...

BURNLEY VS. LINCOLN CITY

Burnley’s home form is imperious in the Premier League throughout this campaign, but they come up against a Lincoln side who have already knocked out the likes of Ipswich and Brighton this term in the competition, so it certainly won’t be easy for the Clarets, who, at this stage of the competition, will fancy their chances of FA Cup glory, perhaps?

It’s last 16 time and Lincoln will be hoping for another cupset at Turf Moor, but this could well be a step too far for the Imps, especially after losing striker Theo Robinson to Southend on transfer deadline day. Fellow frontman Matt Rhead will prove to be a striker Burnley won’t be too used to, either!

What We Sayin’?

At 7/5, a BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals could well look a likely occurrence in Lancashire.

MIDDLESBROUGH VS. OXFORD UNITED

Boro can’t score – fortunately for them, they don’t concede too often either – but Oxford will be a tricky proposition, with the visitors winning eight of their last ten games in all competitions. Compare that to Boro and it’s no wonder why we’re tipping the clash at the Riverside for an upset.

Aitor Karanka has taken this competition seriously though, with the Spanish boss going all out with his team selection, which culminated in a big victory at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the last round. However, Oxford picked up a scalp of their own by brushing Newcastle United aside with a 3-0 victory themselves.

What We Sayin’?

We’re tipping Oxford to triumph in the north-east. A 1-2 away win for the League 1 outfit comes in at 16/1.

MILLWALL VS. LEICESTER CITY

This game could well be the most obvious and most likely upset of the round, mainly because Leicester have been abysmal all season, but slightly more abysmal on the road. They haven’t won a match away from home in English competitions all season.

Fresh from knocking Watford out of the competition on home turf in the last 32, Millwall’s tail will be up. They are 12 games unbeaten in all competitions, have won their last three games and haven’t conceded a goal in their last five matches either. Pretty decent form...

What We Sayin’?

We’re behind a 2-0 Millwall win at 12s, meaning the Lions will make it three Premier League cupsets in successive rounds.

FULHAM VS. TOTTENHAM

Spurs scraped through in the last round against Wycombe Wanderers at White Hart Lane, thanks to Son Heung-Min’s late, late winner. The north-Londoners also suffered something of a surprising defeat at Liverpool last time out, just to prove they are beatable.

Fulham earned a narrow win against Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage in midweek and will be hoping to make it a home doublein the space of this week. Make no mistake, Spurs will begin as favourites, but Fulham are better than Wycombe, do possess a greater chance of springing an upset, and, of course, there’s a reason the BBC 1 cameras are in west-London to broadcast the game...

What We Sayin’?

Spurs have lost only once in the last six meetings against Fulham, winning the other five. But you have to remember the Spurs today, who fight for winning the league, aren’t anything like the Tottenham of a few years ago. We’re backing Fulham 2-1 Tottenham at 12/1.
