With the Premier League fast approaching, Fantasy Premier League users will soon open up (If they haven’t already) their accounts once again for this season of football.
Ahead of kick-off on the 11th August, I’ve put together a team with the £100m budget that I think will fare well throughout the season
Agree or disagree with any of the decisions? Have any other suggestions for the new season? Make sure to tell us down below.
My Fantasy Starting XI - Stan's Plan!
Asmir Begovic- Coming off a Premier League winning year as a backup for Thibaut Courtois, Begovic made the switch to Bournemouth in which seemingly locks his place as a starting goalkeeper in this league once again.
The Bosnian impressed for his former team Stoke with especially great seasons during the 13/14 and 14/15 terms notching a notable 12 clean sheets and 117 saves also 9 clean sheets and 104 saves in the latter campaign imposing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. The addition of Begovic further bolsters the Bournemouth back line that had a decent year in defence which totalled 10 clean sheets putting them 11th in the league. Furthermore, the permanent addition of Nathan Ake should further improve Bournemouth’s chances of securing clean sheets in the Premier League season further helping the Bosnian shot stopper’s point tally to rise. At the reasonable price of £4.5m and a good chance of returning back to his prior form from recent years by reclaiming his starting spot in the Premier league, he looks like a sound investment for any fantasy premier league line-up.
Kieran Trippier- Off his recent 5-year contract extension with Spurs, Trippier will seek to fill the void following the £50 million departure of Kyle Walker. With more minutes opening up through sales and increased matches through domestic and continental competitions it seems destined that the former Burnley right back will be inserted into the starting XI much more frequently even if a replacement is signed due to his great form during his play off the bench and his performances replacing Kyle Walker through injury last season.
Trippier enjoyed great form in his 12 appearances last season, with only half of these being starts, Kieran managed to accumulate an impressive 5 assists and 2 clean sheets in his limited minutes. In comparison to his ex-team-mate Walker who managed 6 assists in 33 appearances. Coinciding with this Spurs had an outstanding defensive output managing 17 clean sheets (joint top for the season) last season. The attacking full back fits the current mould Walker left in the Spurs squad so should see little effect on how Spurs defend this season.
This ready-made replacement looks bound for a breakout season under Pochettino if given more minutes. This is seemingly the popular opinion between Fantasy Premier League users as he has a 15% ownership percentage on the Premier league website. At just £5.5m his ability to conjure up assists for his teammates and Spurs ability to keep clean sheets seems like the perfect recipe for a fantasy premier league defender at a discount price.
Charlie Daniels- Another Bournemouth man enters the list. The English left back exceeded expectations along with his Bournemouth team which looks set to build on their good season.
Daniels was a part of the Bournemouth defence and was able to secure 10 clean sheets, the same amount as Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny whose valued £1.0m higher than the ex-Spurs man. Charlie also managed to amass 3 assists to his impressive portfolio, perhaps more importantly creating 28 chances making him amongst the highest in chances created by defenders. With the addition of clinical finisher Jermain Defoe alongside in-form striker Joshua King, these chances created have a high chance of being converted into assists which could give your team some vital points in this upcoming season of fantasy football.
James Milner- Now reclassified as a defender in fantasy football, the reliable set piece taker looks like standout option for a back line
Milner managed to score 7 out of his 8 penalties taken in the Premier League last season, the Liverpool man also managed 4 assists on the season. Even though his stats took a hit in comparison to prior years he offers valuable points as his new position in fantasy leagues makes him eligible for clean sheet points. James Milner managed to maintain 12 clean sheets last year which will be turned into invaluable points for your team this season.
For £6.5m the former Villain seems like the safe option for reliable points this season from either keeping clean sheets or converting from the penalty circle. However, with rumours that Andrew Robertson is set for a medical and bound for Anfield, it could eat into his playing time. This could be one to watch in the next couple of days
Ryan Bertrand- Ryan Bertrand fills the last spot in the all English defence. The south coast player was in a spell of good form last season managing 4 assists last season which put him joint 2nd highest amongst defenders in terms of assists. In addition to this, Southampton defended well last season despite the departure of their Portuguese captain Jose Fonte, managing to achieve the 4th best defence in the league with 12 clean sheets over the period of the 16/17 term.
Southampton also faces an easy schedule for the first 12 games of the season, playing against bottom half of the table teams from last year and the three newly promoted teams, except from game week 6 and 12 where they play Manchester United and Liverpool. This could see Bertrand tally some solid points from the offset and for £5.5m you could see a good return out of the defender and his value to rise if you want to move on from the left back later on in the season.
Those were our picks for the back line. Make sure to check in tomorrow when we reveal our midfield diamonds, some in the rough, that are sure to sparkle.
