Blair surprised at Edinburgh's Heineken Cup success

Mike BlairEdinburgh scrum half Mike Blair has confessed his team is as surprised as the rest of the rugby world at their run to the Heineken Cup semi-finals. The Scots stunned French heavyweights Toulouse in the quarter finals with a 19-14 win at Murrayfield to book their place in the last four.

And Blair, who scored his side’s only try of the match, admits it’s come as a shock to everyone at the club. He said “We didn’t think we’d get to this stage. When we sat down in pre-season the aim was reaching the quarter-finals and trying to get a home draw. But now we’ve got this far we’ve got a real opportunity to do something even more special than we’ve done so far.”

Edinburgh (+6 Match Handicap) will travel to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to take on Ulster this weekend and Blair knows the size of the challenge that awaits. He added: “We’ve struggled against Ulster (-6 Match Handicap) this year. They’ve got a massively physical pack and a strong defence. But we’ll be looking at ways to get around that to give it a real crack.”
