Cheltenham Festival Betting

The Cheltenham Festival is one of the undoubted highlights of the horse racing calendar and with prize money running second only to the Grand National, it ensures high quality fields right across the four days.

The event attracts huge crowds and, as it usually coincides with St Patrick’s Day on March 17th, a flurry of Irish visitors cross over to join their British counterparts. Even if you’re not a racing fan, there is something special about the festival as a long winter begins to give way to a great summer of sport and that’s one of the reasons why betting at Cheltenham reaches such a fever pitch.

The best of everything

Cheltenham always attracts the best horses, the best trainers and the best jockeys and they race to an intensity which is very rare outside of the four day festival. In recent times, one of the most successful trainers has been Willie Mullins and his horses are always worth watching in the Cheltenham betting markets.

Strangely enough, Mullins has yet to win the overall Champion Trainer Trophy but he frequently dominates the Cheltenham Festival as his mounts seem to rise to the big occasion.

The calendar

Racing starts on Tuesday with Champion Day and a card contain seven races, beginning with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. It’s a schedule packed with some of the biggest events in the sport including the Arkle Challenge Trophy, the Champion Hurdle and the Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase.

Wednesday is Ladies Day and this showcases another seven races which are highlighted by the Champion Bumper and the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Thursday of 2016 is St Patrick’s Day so expect a very lively atmosphere among the crowd. It’s a top day of racing too with another seven events including the World Hurdle and the Pertemps Final.

All three days build up to Friday which is Gold Cup day. The Gold Cup itself is one of the richest races on the circuit and it takes place in the middle of the card at 3.20. Some serious quality will be on show but the race has seen plenty of upsets over the years.

If you are looking to get involved with the Gold Cup betting this year, remember the recent success of Lord Windermere, who came home in 2014 to give some lucky punters a huge profit at 20/1.

The favourites

In 2016, Mullins was dealt an early blow with the loss of the highly-fancied Faugheen who was a very short priced favourite in the Champion Hurdle betting. Despite this setback, the trainer has a number of top class horses who are being heavily backed for their respective races.

Look out for Annie Power in the Mares Hurdle, Un De Sceaux in the Queen Mother Champions Chase and Vautour in the Gold Cup, amongst others.
